Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC)

SOFIC 2011 was held mid-May in the Tampa Convention Center and Andy Park, Director of North American Operations, represented AOS at the annual, three-day event. The conference provides a forum for the commercial sector, academia, professional organizations and government agencies to network with representatives from the four component commands within the USSOCOM (United States Special Forces Command).

Headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida, USSOCOM’s mission is to “provide fully capable Special Operations Forces to defend the United States and its interests” and “synchronize planning of global operations against terrorist networks.”

The theme this year was ‘Setting The Course’ and focused on key acquisition requirements, operations, and technology issues in SOF capability areas – Understand, Communicate, Move and Engage. The conference agenda was packed with a variety of informative track sessions, forums, VIP speakers and panel discussions, plus a large exhibit hall full of gear designed for, or applicable to, special operations.

Using simulation for special ops training is fairly new, but a significant number of speakers mentioned this as an important area for further development. CoJACK has already demonstrated its ability to be used for counterterrorism applications, providing realistic NPCs (Non-Player Characters) that exhibit subtle differences in behaviour, based on motivational and emotional factors.
