AOS at LAND 400 Phase 3 Australian Industry Capability Roadshow

On Monday 2nd of March, AOS’s Principal Robotics Engineer, Nathan Hamilton, presented the company’s AI, autonomy and robotics capability to an eleven-person panel, convened by the Defence Department’s Australian Industry Capability (AIC) office as part of the LAND 400 Phase 3 project. The panel consisted of representatives from Rheinmetall Defence Australia, Hanwha Defence Australia, KPMG Australia, Electro Optic Systems and the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research.


The LAND 400 project is a major project by the Department of Defence to bring the Army’s combat vehicles into the 21st century, and consists of four phases. In the third phase, Mounted Close Combat Capability, Defence is looking to acquire 450 Infantry Fighting Vehicles and 17 Manoeuvre Support Vehicles to replace the 1960’s M113 Armoured Personnel Carriers.


Rheinmetall Defence’s KF41 Lynx Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) and Hanwha Defense’s AS21 Redback IFV have been shortlisted to compete against each other for the opportunity to provide Army with up to 450 tracked IFVs and 17 manoeuvre support vehicles.



In order to promote local Australian industry involvement, Defence organised an Industry Capability Roadshow. The roadshow will pass through all Australian capital cities and selected regional locations. This provides local businesses with the opportunity to share their capabilities with the shortlisted tenders, Rheinmetall Defence Australia and Hanwha Defence Australia and if chosen, contribute to their supply chain during the manufacturing phase.


Following the presentation, the panel asked questions regarding AOS’ AI development, autonomy capabilities and multi-agent solutions, focusing on safety and practical implementation. Nathan answered the questions through emphasising AOS’ approach to problem solving. By understanding the underlying risks in AI and autonomy, and employing third-party safety reviews, the engineering team is able to set in place protocols and precautions. Combined with rigorous testing, this process ensures risks are managed.
